Borrowing its title from an iconic film by the renowned artistic duo Peter Fischli and David Weiss, the exhibition The Way Things Go brings together around thirty films and videos by artists whose works can be reinterpreted in the light of the current health crisis. Conceived as an immediate response to the COVID-19 pandemic—which led to the self-isolation of nearly half the world’s population and the abrupt halt of all activities deemed non-essential to crisis management—this presentation was developed over the few weeks of lockdown in France.

By bringing together a selection of film and video works connected, whether directly or indirectly, to this unprecedented and circumstantial moment, the project offers a portrait of its time. It successively evokes domestic and family life, the interruption or intensification of work (bore-out versus burnout), the new hygienist order, the absorption of reality through the media and digital platforms, hyperconnectivity, the craze for DIY and solitary exercise, care, the exacerbation of social divides, nature reclaiming its rights, the fear of crowds or of solitude—all situations characteristic of this period, experienced firsthand or vicariously, and metaphorically summoned by the various works on display. While most of these works, created prior to the crisis, take on a new layer of meaning here, others stem directly from it and were produced by their authors during their respective lockdowns (Hoël Duret, John Smith). Taking advantage of the new strict regulations in public venues, the exhibition’s scenography has been designed to favour the solo viewing of these works, ensuring complete safety.

Echoing Fischli and Weiss’s film, which stages a series of chain reactions in the studio space—where the principle of cause and effect reigns and where we watch, wide-eyed, an expertly orchestrated succession of disasters—the Capc’s eponymous project playfully explores the fragility of any system. It illustrates how, in response to mechanisms that burst, spread and ignite on all sides, one must at all times be able to adapt to the course of things.
