James Richards

Radio at Night, 2015

The second edition of The Screen: Sounds of Light, a programme dedicated to film and video, focuses on the relationships between film and music through a series of solo presentations of works by international artists of different generations. This programme explores the links between music and moving image through different sound strategies used to support film narratives, whether it is a soundtrack created specially for the work in collaboration with the artist or an existing music.

Digital video, 8 min.

James Richards' work encompasses video, sculpture, sound work and installation. In his videos, he juxtaposes his own footage to existing images taken from different film archives or from the internet to create personal narratives. In Radio at Night, images are associated to form an ensemble of representations that reveal a poetical sensibility echoing the films of Derek Jarman, of whom this work explores the legacy. The soundtrack composed by the artist includes electronic musical arrangements coupled to the voice of the trio Juice, making an allusion to the experimental music of Coil, Jarman’s long-term collaborators.

Commissioned by the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis with major support from the Bentson Foundation.
