The restoration of contemporary art often raises numerous ethical questions for restorers and curators. The act of conserving and restoring may seem natural for an old work, but it is less so for a contemporary work which is just a few years or decades old!
As a preamble to any kind of intervention, the restoration of contemporary art invariably raises this same question: why restore, and how?
It has to respect the artist’s choice, even if he advocates a substitution having more to do with renovation than restoration, it must be reversible and it must guarantee the permanence of the work in time.
