I Belong to The Ship

As part of Our Ocean, Your Horizon, a proposal for the Satellite programme 2016 by Heidi Ballet.

In their collaborative practice Patrick Bernier and Olive Martin (Paris, 1971 and Liège, 1972) explore the porous nature of identity in the migratory context. Their projects research multi-layered localities and territorial frontiers in which they link traditional notions of physical space with legal zones that have ephemeral qualities. These ephemeral zones include, on the one hand, immigrants’ rights to belong and, on the other, the internet. The complexity of spatial divides becomes most clear in projects like New Kahnawaké, in which they visit a small native reserve village that manages an online casino, and in the on-going project X and Y v. France, in which they juxtapose the legal status of an online document with the legal status of an undocumented immigrant.

Patrick Bernier and Olive Martin’s works have recently been shown in, among other places, the Belgian Pavilion at the 2015 Venice Biennial, the Nouveau Festival, Centre Pompidou (2015), Witte de With, Rotterdam (2014), Arcadia University Art Gallery, Philadelphia (2014) and BAK Utrecht (2013).
