#after − from Books to Exhibitions

Through a selection of key publications, including original editions, reeditions and reinterpretations, this presentation in the CAPC’s library space bears witness to the groundbreaking developments in publishing initiated by Conceptual Art in the 1960s. Running counter to the ‘dematerialization of the art object’ posited by Lucy R.
Lippard and John Chandler in 1968,  in that decade the book or catalogue became a form of artistic expression in its own right. No longer considered as a source of secondary information, it challenged readers to reconsider the status and meaning of the work of art, the exhibition and the collection.

Adopting a cross-disciplinary approach, the two curators, artist Alex Chevalier and art historian François Trahais, explore the legacy of three tutelary figures in the history of conceptualisms: Marcel Duchamp, Edward Ruscha and Seth Siegelaub. For a better understanding of their influence on contemporary practices, the presentation has been organised along three overarching themes: from archive to collection; the book as work of art; and the catalogue as exhibition.

For this exhibition, the curators approached the CAPC as an institution that has actively contributed to the dissemination of Conceptual Art in France. In collaboration with the Centre des livres d’artistes in Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche (CDLA), which will host the second part of the exhibition in 2020, the museum presents a series of books that question the traditional criteria of the art object and the status of the artist, curator or publisher as author.
